Dr. Mary-Magdalene Pedavoah, Senior Lecturer and Head of the Applied Chemistry Department at C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS), has highlighted the academic programs offered by her department.
These include PhD, MPhil, and MSc programs in Applied Chemistry, as well as undergraduate degrees in Applied Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Technology, and Laboratory Technology.
Additionally, the department offers a Diploma in Laboratory Technology, which serves as a pathway for students who do not initially meet the entry requirements for degree programs.
Speaking on A1 Radio, Dr. Pedavoah explained that students, particularly those with lower grades, receive the necessary support in the diploma program, allowing them to transition into degree programs at the 200 level if they perform well.
“The diploma program serves as a bridge for students to advance into degree programs. Some students, due to the D7 issue, are unable to enroll directly in degree programs, so we place them in the diploma program and provide them with the support they need,” she explained.
She also emphasized the diverse career opportunities available to Applied Chemistry graduates.
“With a degree in Applied Chemistry, you can work in a laboratory, a pharmaceutical industry, or even pursue a career in teaching,” she stated.
Concerns Over Low Female Participation
Despite the department’s efforts to support students from various academic backgrounds, Dr. Pedavoah expressed concern over the lack of female students pursuing chemistry at CKT-UTAS.
“For the past three years, we have had no female applicants for chemistry programs,” she revealed, describing this as a worrying trend in a traditionally male-dominated field.
She noted that although female participation remains low, there is still some progress, as three female students are currently in their final year of study.
Dr. Pedavoah’s remarks came as Ghana joined the world in celebrating the International Day of Girls and Women in Science on February 11, 2025.
