Dr. Pedavoah urges women to share their stories to inspire others

Dr. Mary Magdalene Pedavoah, a senior lecturer at C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS), has encouraged women who have pursued careers to share their stories, highlighting the challenges they have faced.

She believes that by doing so, people—especially men—can better understand the struggles that girls and women endure to achieve their dreams.

“Two students came in—mothers—and they are pursuing undergraduate programs. Will I discourage them from bringing their children to school? No. Instead, I have to tell them my story again and encourage them, but they must know that it’s not easy. It’s not going to be easy. You’re not going to make those good grades you want if you want to combine the two. You can’t serve two masters,” she explained.

Dr. Pedavoah emphasized that behind every story, there are real people with real struggles. She noted that many women go through emotional and personal challenges, which often prevent them from sharing their experiences. However, she urged women to speak up, as their stories can inspire and create a lasting impact.

“When people want to tell their stories, they hesitate because there are faces involved, and it can be challenging. If you go into details, emotions take over, and people prefer to stay silent. But the truth is, if we don’t tell our stories, nobody will know. It’s about impact. Wherever you are, you should create an impact. If you can’t make the situation better, don’t make it worse. We may not tell the entire story, but the necessary parts should be shared so that others can learn from them,” she added.

Celebrating the International Day for Women and Girls in Science

Dr. Pedavoah’s call for women to share their experiences aligns with the global celebration of the International Day for Women and Girls in Science, observed annually on February 11. This day recognizes the critical role women and girls play in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), while also addressing gender disparities in these fields.

The day’s objective is to promote full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls, as well as to encourage policies that support gender equality in STEM education and careers. By sharing their journeys, women in science can inspire young girls to overcome barriers and pursue careers in STEM.

The theme for 2025, “Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges: Women in Science for a Sustainable Future,” highlights the need to eliminate obstacles that hinder women’s participation in STEM and promote inclusive scientific advancements that contribute to a sustainable world.

Dr. Pedavoah’s message reinforces this mission, urging women to speak up and mentor the next generation. By sharing their struggles and triumphs, they can shape a future where more women confidently enter and excel in scientific and professional fields.
