Simon Akibange Aworingo, the Member of Parliament for the Navrongo Central constituency, has launched an essay competition aimed at enhancing education in the Navrongo area. The competition, he said, is part of his broader effort to invest in the academic development of young people in the constituency, particularly at the Junior and Senior High School levels.
In an interview on A1 Radio, Mr. Aworingo shared his vision of turning Navrongo into a center of academic excellence. He highlighted the importance of improving students’ reading and writing skills, which he believes are essential for their academic and personal growth. The MP emphasized that, as part of his campaign promise, he is committed to fostering better educational outcomes for the youth in the area.
“I felt that one of the things Navrongo stands to benefit from is investing in education so that it becomes a center of academic excellence in the region. I looked at the reading and writing skills of young people and felt that, at the very least, we should begin by finding ways to improve them,” he said.
The essay competition, open to both JHS and SHS students, aims to encourage students to read more, understand deeply, and develop strong writing skills. Mr. Aworingo explained that the competition is just one step toward a broader initiative to support students in their academic journeys. He further outlined plans to assist students in preparing for their final examinations, including offering mock exams and extra classes for final-year students to help boost their confidence.
“Beyond this competition, I am looking at how we can support our students to prepare for their final exams, both at the JHS and SHS levels,” he added.
The first-time parliamentarian also expressed his commitment to improving the region’s educational infrastructure. He noted that he plans to engage with stakeholders, including the Minister of Education, to ensure that the necessary resources are made available to schools in Navrongo Central.
The essay competition is open to all JHS and SHS students within the constituency. Mr. Aworingo encouraged interested participants to contact the organizers for guidance on how to submit their entries. A panel of language teachers will assess the essays and select the top performers, who will receive awards.
Additionally, Mr. Aworingo urged the public to participate in an upcoming educational forum, inviting stakeholders to share ideas on improving the education system, particularly in light of the challenges posed by the Free SHS program.
“People should come on board and bring their ideas on how we can reshape our education system and get it back on track, especially considering the challenges that have emerged with the Free SHS program,” he stated.
