The Vice Chancellor of Bolgatanga Technical University (BTU), Professor Samuel Erasmus Alnaa, has emphasized the need for universities, particularly technical institutions, to shift from theoretical research to more practical, research-driven approaches that address real-world problems.
Speaking on A1 Radio in response to discussions from the recent National Education Forum, Prof. Alnaa highlighted the growing competitiveness of the global economy, especially with advancements in technology.
He stressed that Africa, as a developing continent, must realign its university education to equip students with the necessary skills to meet industrial and societal demands.
“The world is now a highly competitive society with the rise of technology. Therefore, our universities must readjust their teaching and research methods to fine-tune students’ skills for real-life applications,” he stated.
Prof. Alnaa underscored the importance of practical education, explaining that many graduates struggle to apply their knowledge due to a lack of hands-on experience during their academic training.
He urged universities to move beyond traditional, theory-based research and focus on innovations that directly solve community challenges.
He further revealed that BTU has already implemented practical-based strategies to ensure students are equipped with problem-solving skills relevant to industries.
“At BTU, we have taken significant steps to bridge this gap. Our programs are structured to provide students with industry-focused training, ensuring that research outcomes are solution-driven rather than merely academic,” he noted.
