The Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, has lamented the economic decline in Bawku and the region due to the prolonged unrest in the Bawku enclave.

During a courtesy visit to Zug-Raan Bawku Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, the Overlord of the Kusaug Traditional Area, to formally introduce himself as the President’s representative in the region, the Minister emphasized the urgent need for peace in the area.

According to the Minister, the region’s development is regressing due to the conflict, noting that Bawku once had a very vibrant market that contributed significantly to the region’s economy.

“Bawku used to be an economic hub, driving rapid development in the Upper East Region and Ghana as a whole. However, the conflict has taken a toll on the economy, and we are suffering from economic decline because of Bawku,” he stated.

The Minister’s concerns about the economic impact of the conflict echo his earlier statements on the need for peace and development in the region as he works to address the challenges facing the Upper East Region.

The Regional Minister assured the people of Bawku of his readiness to effectively implement the President’s and the government’s blueprint for bringing a lasting solution to the conflict.

Mr. Akamugri also took the opportunity to call on all stakeholders involved in resolving the conflict to prioritize justice at all times, stating that “there cannot be peace without fairness.”

The Minister urged the people of Bawku to uphold peace, stressing that development can only thrive in a stable environment. “If there was peace in Bawku, the Upper East Region would have made significant progress by now,” he said.

After his visit to Zug-Raan and his meeting with the chiefs and queen mothers of the Kusaug Traditional Council, Mr. Akamugri proceeded to the Nabdam District, where he met with the Paramount Chief of the Sakote Traditional Area, Naba Sigiri Bewong, and the Paramount Chief of the Nangodi Traditional Area, Naba Yelzoya Kosom Asaga II.
