Poultry Farming: A key to reducing unemployment in Upper East – Kulbong Zeba

Kulbong Zeba, the Secretary of the Poultry Farmers Association in the Upper East Region, has emphasized that poultry farming has the potential to significantly reduce unemployment in the region, especially if young people take it more seriously.

He noted that while crop farming receives significant attention, poultry farming—an industry with enormous potential—is often overlooked.

“Poultry farming is a big industry. When we take it seriously, it will help to reduce the unemployment rate in the region.”

He pointed out that, unlike some other industries, poultry farming does not require a large amount of capital to start, making it accessible to aspiring entrepreneurs. However, Mr. Zeba stressed that new poultry farmers should seek guidance from industry experts to avoid costly mistakes, especially when working with limited resources.

“When you are about to start, get experts—people who have been in the industry—to give you advice and show you the way, so that you don’t struggle with the little capital you have.”

Speaking on the Daybreak Upper East show on A1 Radio, Mr. Zeba highlighted that despite the government’s various initiatives, such as the ‘Planting for Food and Jobs’ program, livestock farming—including poultry—has been largely neglected. He believes that without proper government support, the full potential of poultry farming remains underutilized.

“Think of the past government. When they introduced ‘Planting for Food and Jobs,’ livestock was left out.”

Beyond creating direct employment on poultry farms, Mr. Zeba noted that a vibrant poultry sector could generate jobs across the entire value chain. This includes opportunities in feed production, veterinary services, meat processing, and other related industries.

“When you visit other regions, you’ll see that poultry farmers have employed a lot of people. If we come together as a strong and vibrant industry, we can create jobs.”

He urged the youth in the region to consider poultry farming as a viable and profitable career option, emphasizing that a thriving local poultry industry could reduce dependence on imported poultry products and boost local economic growth.
