Residents of Kandiga-Kurungu, a community in the Kassena-Nankana West District of the Upper East Region, are calling on the government and philanthropists to come to their aid after years of neglect and underdevelopment.
Speaking to Bolga FM, the Assembly Member for the Kandiga-Kurungu Electoral Area, Asaah Adamu Yakubu, described the poor state of the community’s only basic school. He urged the government, particularly the Ministry of Education, to address the school’s infrastructural deficit. He lamented that due to the lack of tables and chairs, schoolchildren are forced to lie on their bellies to write their exams.
The Youth Chief of the community, Naba Abillah Dennis, highlighted the severe overcrowding in classrooms, where over sixty to seventy students are packed into a single room. He added that the walls and floors have deep cracks, making the structure unsafe. He stressed that the overcrowding is negatively affecting the teacher-to-student ratio, hampering both teaching and learning. Additionally, he underscored the urgent need for a dam or boreholes in the community to support farming activities during the dry season.
An elderly resident, Hellen Abillah, voiced concerns over the lack of electricity in the area. She explained that residents walk long distances to neighboring towns just to charge their mobile phones, paying as much as 2 Ghana cedis per charge. She also noted that, due to the absence of electricity, women must travel far to access grinding mills and potable water, leaving the community further disadvantaged. She appealed to duty bearers to provide the community with electricity and clean drinking water.
A nurse in the community also made a passionate plea for assistance, calling on well-meaning Ghanaians to help provide transportation for the CHPS compound to facilitate emergency healthcare services and save lives when emergencies arise.
