Chief of Kontibtaabig urges MPs to drive regional development

The Chief of Kontibtaabig, under the Sakote Traditional Area, Naab Bileehsong Lagwonht, has emphasized that the development of the Upper East Region largely rests on the shoulders of its Members of Parliament (MPs).

He asserted that, given the overwhelming support the region gave to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 elections, it would be disappointing—and even laughable—if basic development goals were not met.

Speaking during President John Dramani Mahama’s visit to the region as part of his Thank You Tour on Thursday, the chief stressed the need for the region’s MPs to unite and actively lobby for critical projects.

He highlighted that President Mahama had appointed key MPs from the region to influential positions aimed at fostering development. He pointed out that Dr. Dominic Ayine serves as the Attorney General, Dr. Clement Apaak is the Deputy Minister of Education, and Isaac Adongo chairs the Finance Committee in Parliament while also serving as a Board Member of the Bank of Ghana.

Naab Lagwonht stated that these appointments were strategic and presented an opportunity for the region’s leaders to push for the development they have long yearned for. However, he warned that if they fail to work consciously, collaboratively, and consistently, the region will remain trapped in the cycle of neglect that has persisted for decades.

He further called on President Mahama to ensure the allocation of key developmental projects that would accelerate progress in the Upper East Region. He noted that despite the region’s unwavering loyalty to the NDC, significant infrastructural and socio-economic gaps remain. He cited the lack of major road networks, inadequate healthcare facilities, and challenges in the education sector as areas requiring urgent attention.

The chief lamented that during Mahama’s presidency from 2012 to 2016, there were high expectations that the region’s loyalty would be rewarded with meaningful development, yet critical areas still lag behind. This time, he emphasized, there must be a deliberate and strategic approach to ensure the Upper East Region receives its fair share of national resources.

Naab Lagwonht urged MPs, government appointees, and stakeholders to work in synergy to ensure that development reaches every corner of the region. He also called for accountability among political leaders, stressing that residents must demand results—not just political rhetoric.
