Ghanaian international artist and philanthropist Samuel Asaa, popularly known as SamAiam, has declared his strong support for the construction of an airport in the Upper East Region.
According to SamAiam, the airport is a necessity that will bring development and create employment opportunities, especially for the youth in the region.
He believes the airport will address the growing trend of residents traveling to other regions, such as the Northern Region, to access air travel. He argues that the construction is long overdue and will significantly boost local businesses and tourism.
“It is good to have an airport in the region. When you look at Tamale, you can see some significant changes in terms of development because of the airport. So I think it is necessary we also have one here. I believe it will drive development, especially for the youth. Let us support and collaborate with the government to make it a reality,” he stated in an interview.
However, some individuals have raised concerns about the project’s priority, citing other pressing developmental needs in the region.
In response, SamAiam, who remains committed to the growth and transformation of the Upper East Region, emphasized that the airport will help reduce the risks associated with road travel, considering the poor nature of the roads leading to and from the region.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, recently visited the proposed site for the Upper East Regional Airport, reiterating the government’s commitment to the project. SamAiam has urged the government, GACL, and all relevant stakeholders to prioritize and fast-track the airport’s construction.
The international superstar also addressed concerns about the airport’s potential usage. He expressed confidence that patronage would not be an issue, noting that many people from the Upper East Region already fly from Tamale to Accra and other destinations.
