Residents of the Bolgatanga Municipality continue to grapple with poorly lit streets, a situation that has sparked renewed concern over public safety and urban management. Former Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Rex Asanga, has expressed disappointment over the current state of street lighting in the municipality, pointing out that most of the issues could be resolved with basic maintenance.
Speaking on A1 Radio, Mr. Asanga recounted efforts made during his tenure to improve lighting in the area, describing how he prioritized the procurement of materials to address the problem.
“One of the problems I really faced was the fact that the town was very dark, and so I had to do something about it,” he said, revealing that the assembly has a trained electrician specifically responsible for streetlight repairs. He noted that this makes it unnecessary to delay maintenance due to leadership transitions.
He questioned why the situation has worsened, suggesting that the absence of a substantive MCE since January 8 should not be an excuse for inaction.
“The current situation—I don’t understand why it has gotten to this. Maybe it’s because there has been no MCE from January 8 till now, but I want to think that these are not issues that require an MCE in office before they can be handled,” he said.
He emphasized that the Coordinating Director at the Municipal Assembly has the authority to ensure that streetlights are fixed and should be able to mobilize resources and personnel accordingly. The former MCE also noted that many of the faulty streetlights require only minor materials to function again, reinforcing his call for swift and practical steps to restore proper lighting across the municipality.
