The former Member of Parliament for the Chiana-Paga Constituency, Lawyer Rudolf Amenga-Etego, has issued a passionate call to the newly confirmed District Chief Executive (DCE) for Kassena-Nankana West, Stephen Aeke Akurungu, urging him to make sanitation and access to potable water top priorities.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Bolga FM on the sidelines of the confirmation ceremony in Paga on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, Mr. Amenga-Etego painted a worrying picture of poor sanitation in the district. He said plastic waste—especially used sachet water rubbers—was littered across communities, posing a serious health risk.

“Plastic waste is everywhere, from our markets to our homes. Pure water rubbers are scattered all over the place. If we don’t act now, we risk facing outbreaks of diseases like cholera. Most households don’t even have proper places of convenience,” he warned.

He emphasized that addressing sanitation challenges must be an urgent concern for the new DCE to prevent cross-contamination and the spread of communicable diseases such as cholera.

Turning his attention to another critical issue, Lawyer Amenga-Etego acknowledged ongoing efforts to improve access to clean water but insisted that more needs to be done.

“This is a predominantly farming district. Water is not just a necessity for drinking but for livelihoods. I commend the current MP for the efforts so far, but I believe the MP and the DCE must work closely to resolve the water crisis and attend to other pressing needs of our people.”

He also hinted at his readiness to serve in any capacity under President John Mahama’s government if called upon.

“If President Mahama sees it fit, I am willing and ready to serve. Service to the people and the party remains my top priority,” he stated.

On Tuesday, April 29, 2025, assembly members of the Kassena-Nankana West District Assembly gave overwhelming approval to Stephen Aeke Akurungu as District Chief Executive (DCE). Nominated by President John Dramani Mahama, Mr. Akurungu received 58 out of 65 votes, earning a commanding 98.1% endorsement.

The confirmation ceremony brought together several dignitaries, including former MP under the Mahama administration, Hon. Abuga Pele, and other notable National Democratic Congress (NDC) party stalwarts.
