NPP considering holding flagbearer race before other internal elections – Nana Akomea

The leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is seeking the full support of its members at the upcoming delegates’ conference to enable the adoption of bold measures aimed at preparing the party for victory in the 2028 general elections.

One key proposal to be tabled at the conference is to conduct the election of the party’s flagbearer before any other internal elections.

Nana Akomea, a national communicator for the party and former Member of Parliament for Okaikoi South, shared these insights during an interview on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East show with host Mark Smith.

“One of the thoughts is to hold the flagbearer election as the first election,” Mr. Akomea said.

According to him, the rationale behind this proposal is to minimize the rancour and division that often characterizes the flagbearer race and spills over into other levels of party organization.

“This is so that the tension that builds up doesn’t spread through the polling stations, the constituency executives, and the regions—because that’s what usually happens. Right from the polling station level, you find people organizing supporters for different camps,” he explained.

Mr. Akomea emphasized that once a flagbearer is elected, it is crucial for that individual to rise above intra-party divisions and work towards unifying the party.

“It is in your interest to show a big heart and not do anything that would harden opposition to you,” he advised.

He further cited his own political career as an example, explaining that his ability to maintain unity within the Okaikoi South constituency was key to his successful tenure as MP for four consecutive terms.

“It was unity that helped me retain my seat. Whoever emerges as the NPP flagbearer must adopt the same approach,” he added.

For those in the party, the NPP’s internal cohesion and timely strategic decisions, like the proposed early flagbearer election, are seen as vital steps to rebuilding grassroots momentum and avoiding the internal fractures that contributed to previous electoral challenges.
