The Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Election Committee in the Upper East Region, Osman Muntawakilu, has urged all candidates and members of the Association to conduct themselves with decorum and mutual respect as the region and nation prepares for its upcoming GJA elections scheduled for June 30, 2025.
He gave the admonishment during the official balloting exercise for positions on the ballot paper held at GBC in Bolgatanga, where two candidates—Albert Sore and Ebo Bruce-Quansah—are vying for the position of Regional Chairman. At the end of the process, Mr. Sore secured the number one spot on the ballot paper, while Mr. Bruce-Quansah picked number two.
Speaking to journalists after the balloting, Mr. Muntawakilu emphasized the need for a peaceful, issues-based campaign.
“This is a fraternity of journalists, and the Ghana Journalists Association is about the welfare of its members—not a platform for personal domination,” he stressed. “This election should be a friendly contest. Whoever emerges as the winner should uphold the principles upon which the GJA was founded—primarily the welfare of Ghanaian journalists.”
He advised both candidates to avoid attacking each other during their campaigns and instead focus on sharing their vision and plans for the Association. “Sell your ideas, don’t belittle your opponent,” he said.
The Election Committee Chairman also appealed to eligible voters and supporters to be cautious with their conduct and commentary throughout the campaign period, warning against actions that could tarnish the GJA’s longstanding reputation for peace and professionalism in the region.
“If you have a preferred candidate, support them by sharing their vision. But do not make statements or take actions that may cause friction. We are few in this region and cross paths often. Let’s not let this election divide us,” Mr. Muntawakilu stated.
In addition to the Chairman position, some candidates are going unopposed and therefore will not be subjected to the electoral process. These include Joshua Asaah for Regional Vice Chairman, Adongo Apubeo Anthony for Regional Secretary, and Wegwi Raymond for Regional Treasurer.
