Members of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) in the Bolgatanga Municipality took a well-deserved break from the classroom to engage in a refreshing hiking experience on Saturday, June 14, 2025, at the scenic Tongo Hills in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region of Ghana.

The hiking event, which was part of a wellness initiative, brought together young GNAT members and the Ghana National Association of Teachers Ladies Association (GNATLAS) wing for a morning filled with nature, physical activity, and community bonding.

Participants assembled at Abole Junction in Bolgatanga as early as 6:00 A.M. before making their way to the iconic Tongo Hills, known for its breathtaking views and unique rock formations. The hike included a series of engaging activities such as light aerobic workouts, team-building games, and interactive group exercises designed to foster camaraderie and improve well-being.

To keep spirits high and energy levels up, attendees were treated to free snacks and refreshments, adding a delightful touch to the adventure-filled morning.

The hiking program was designed not only as a fitness and recreational outing but also as a platform to promote mental rejuvenation, physical well-being, and stronger interpersonal relationships among GNAT and GNATLAS members. The initiative underscores the association’s commitment to creating opportunities that support holistic health and wellness for teachers across the region.

“We believe that teachers also need time to unwind and connect with nature. Events like these are important for morale, motivation, and mental health,” one of the organizers shared.

Set against the natural backdrop of Tongo Hills, the event allowed members to explore the region’s rugged beauty, engage in meaningful conversations with colleagues, and embrace the benefits of outdoor activities. The program also reinforced a renewed sense of unity and collaboration among GNAT members in Bolgatanga.

The success of this event has encouraged calls for more teacher wellness programs in the region, especially those that combine physical activity, leisure, and professional networking.

With initiatives like these, GNAT Bolgatanga continues to demonstrate leadership in promoting the well-being of educators in Ghana while showcasing the rich tourism potential of the Upper East Region.
