NPP not an ordinary party, it scares NDC – Dr. Akonga

A prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Team in the Upper East Region, Dr. Samuel Akonga, has described the NPP as a party whose elite and intellectual foundation deeply unsettles the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

According to Dr. Akonga, the NPP’s reputation as a party of professionals, technocrats, and policy experts continues to create unease within the NDC, making it a formidable political force in Ghana’s democratic landscape.

“The NPP is not an ordinary political party. Its elite nature alone scares the NDC,” he remarked.

Speaking on A1 Radio, Dr. Akonga—who is also a lecturer at the Bolgatanga Technical University—urged party members to remain united, disciplined, and focused as the party prepares for the 2028 general elections.

“Being in opposition is not easy. If you meet me and ask, ‘how far?’ I’ll say, ‘we are in opposition yooo!’ But when we return to power, that question will bring joy,” he added with a touch of humor.

Dr. Akonga emphasized that internal unity and commitment to a common goal are essential for the NPP’s return to power in 2028. He noted that the current NDC administration has, in his view, failed to meet the expectations of Ghanaians, creating a strong basis for the NPP’s campaign message.

“The NDC administration is mismanaging the political and economic systems. That alone gives us a strong platform to campaign on. But we can only succeed if we put an end to internal wrangling and focus on the bigger picture—winning the 2028 elections,” he said.

Dr. Akonga further stated that the identity of the party’s flagbearer for 2028 should not be the focus of internal debate. Instead, the collective priority should be the NPP’s return to power and the advancement of its development agenda.

His comments come at a time when the New Patriotic Party is re-strategizing and reorganizing after its defeat in the most recent general elections.
