The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Upper East Region has removed the Second Vice Chairman of the Pusiga Constituency, Sawuda Bilgumsey, from his position following allegations of fraud involving more than GH₵1 million.
Mr. Bilgumsey has also been disqualified from holding any party position until he refunds the full amount he is accused of fraudulently collecting from party members.
According to the party’s Regional Disciplinary Committee, Mr. Bilgumsey allegedly defrauded close to 100 individuals under the pretense of securing them employment, particularly within the security services, amassing over one million Ghana cedis in the process.
Speaking on A1 Radio, Upper East Regional Chairman of the NPP, Lawyer Anthony Namoo, described Mr. Bilgumsey’s actions as “damaging” to the party’s reputation. “He used his position to deceive people. Even though he didn’t physically harm the party, his conduct under the colour of his office brought the name of the party into disrepute,” Namoo stated.
This disciplinary action is part of a broader crackdown that has seen 16 other party officials and members from the Pusiga and Tempane constituencies sanctioned for misconduct during the 2024 general elections.
The sanctions followed investigations initiated on January 25, 2025, after multiple complaints of anti-party behavior were filed. Disciplinary hearings took place between March 22 and 23 at the NPP Regional Secretariat in Bolgatanga.
Among those removed from their positions and banned for five years are Emmanuel Awinimi Atesiba (Constituency Communications Officer), Jacob Akazusah (Treasurer), and Musah Awudu (First Vice Chairman). Others, including Agbango Jonathan Akugri and Ayaaba Jacob Asaman, were suspended for three to four years. Notably, Edward Atule Akwaka and Alhassan Abusang were sanctioned for refusing to appear before the committee.
However, not all accused members were found guilty. Five individuals, including Salifu Ibn Adams, the Constituency Research and Elections Officer, and Haruna Salam, the Assistant Secretary, were exonerated of all allegations.
The NPP regional leadership says these decisions are aimed at restoring discipline, upholding integrity, and rebuilding public trust in the party ahead of future electoral activities.
