Former Chief Executive Officer of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Parliamentary Candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Zebilla Constituency, Dr. John Kingsley Krugu, has described the recent disciplinary actions taken against some party members in the Upper East Region as a necessary step to uphold internal discipline.
Speaking in an exclusive interview on A1 Radio, Dr. Krugu emphasized that such internal measures are not unusual and should not be misconstrued as signs of division within the party.
“This is normal. It happens in every political party. You cannot promote unity by ignoring unacceptable conduct. That only encourages indiscipline and anti-party behavior,” he explained.
The NPP recently suspended or barred several individuals for misconduct and actions deemed contrary to the party’s constitution. Dr. Krugu reiterated that these steps are crucial to maintaining the integrity and functionality of the party.
According to him, enforcing discipline ensures that members act in alignment with the values and rules enshrined in the party’s constitution. He stressed that unity should be based on shared principles—not blind tolerance for misconduct.
Touching on calls for reconciliation with disgruntled members who have exited the party, Dr. Krugu said reinstatement should depend on the individual’s willingness to accept their mistakes and show genuine remorse.
“If they accept wrongdoing and demonstrate a change in attitude, they can be brought back. But if they remain defiant, then there’s no justification for reintegration,” he asserted.
Dr. Krugu also reminded the public that political parties are voluntary associations. “Nobody can truly sack someone from a political party because it is your vote that counts. Even if you’re barred from holding a position, you can still vote. That is the essence of democracy,” he noted.
He concluded by stating that leadership within any political party must uphold its core values and constitution. “You cannot want to lead a party and at the same time disregard its principles. Leadership begins with discipline,” he said.
Dr. Krugu’s comments come at a time when internal unity and discipline remain critical to the NPP’s prospects ahead of the 2028 elections, especially in politically competitive regions like the Upper East.
