DCE pushes mining companies to sponsor students in medicine and engineering

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Talensi, John Millim Nabwomya, has called on two mining companies operating in the district—Cardinal Namdini Mining Limited, a subsidiary of Shandong Gold, and Earl International Group Ghana Gold Limited—to prioritize education and healthcare in their corporate social responsibility (CSR) commitments.

Speaking on A1 Radio, Mr. Nabwomya proposed that at least 10 to 20 students from Talensi be sponsored annually to pursue medicine and other critical professional courses, particularly engineering.

He stressed that such an investment would help address long-term development gaps in the district.

“If we have students pursuing medicine through CSR support, that alone is enough for us. Once they complete, they can help solve pressing health challenges here,” the DCE said.

Mr. Nabwomya emphasized that development must be twofold—human resource and infrastructure. He explained that while constructing facilities is important, training people to manage those facilities is equally critical.

“If we have students studying courses that enable them to manage the mines or work in our hospitals, it will ensure Talensi has its own people addressing its own needs,” he noted.

The DCE also underscored the urgent need to expand the Talensi District Hospital, which serves as a referral center for all health compounds in the area. He lamented that the facility lacks adequate infrastructure, equipment, and personnel, undermining healthcare delivery.

“We need to expand this facility because without the right machines and staff, referring patients there becomes meaningless,” he said.

Mr. Nabwomya’s call reflects a broader push for mining companies to design structured CSR mechanisms that not only invest in infrastructure but also build human capacity, ensuring sustainable development for Talensi.
