Development advocate Solomon TTB Zenakena has raised concern about the social consequences of large-scale mining activities in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region.

Speaking on A1 Radio, he explained that before the arrival of mining companies, the people of Talensi enjoyed cordial relations marked by mutual respect among traditional authorities, including Tindaanas, Naabas, clan heads, queen mothers, and family landowners, all of whom worked together to promote development.

“Prior to the presence of these large-scale mining companies, I must state without equivocation that the good people of Talensi used to have cordial relationships. There was complete respect between the Tindaanas and the Naabas, and complete respect for clan heads,” he said.

According to him, the entry of mining firms has created deep divisions within the community, fueling disputes over authority and supremacy that have weakened the previously united front of the people.

“When these people came, people are now battling for authority, supremacy, divisions here and there. That is a major challenge in Talensi. So, when it comes to mining, actually, it hasn’t helped. It has really brought a lot of cracks, and I can say that we need to really look at that particular matter seriously,” he stressed.
