Ethel Humanitarian Empowerment Projects (EHEP), a non-governmental organization, successfully conducted a three-day eye care outreach program in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region, restoring sight to 24 patients and screening more than 400 others for various eye conditions.
The program, held from September 3 to 5, began with a large-scale screening exercise at St. Theresa Catholic School. A medical team assembled by the foundation examined hundreds of residents, diagnosing conditions ranging from minor impairments to severe cataracts.
The outreach climaxed at the Tongo District Hospital, where 24 patients underwent life-changing surgeries, including four individuals who had been living in total blindness. For the first time in the hospital’s history, such advanced ophthalmic procedures were carried out locally.
Importantly, the initiative came at no cost to patients or the hospital. EHEP fully sponsored the screenings, surgeries, medications, and follow-up care.
Dr. Ethel Yiranbon Annor-Tenkorang, founder of EHEP, expressed her fulfillment at the outcomes of the program.
“Witnessing the moment a bandage is removed and someone sees a loved one’s face again after years of darkness is the greatest reward. We are not just conducting surgeries; we are restoring independence, dignity, and hope,” she said.
Her husband and co-founder, Michael Annor-Tenkorang, joined her in commending the medical team, supporters, and the Tongo community for their cooperation and trust.
Local health officials and community leaders lauded the intervention as both historic and transformative. Beyond providing immediate relief, they noted, the project demonstrated that complex surgeries could be successfully performed within the region, boosting confidence in the capacity of local hospitals.
EHEP was established by Dr. Annor-Tenkorang and her husband, who pledged to extend its empowerment projects to other underserved communities across Ghana, with a focus on health, mentorship, and holistic community development.
The outreach was supported by Clearsight Vision Services, as well as friends and family of the foundation.
