Former General Manager of A1 Radio and past Upper East Regional Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), William Jalulah, has been honoured for his long and dedicated service to journalism and media development in the region.

Mr. Jalulah received the recognition at the 4th Upper East Regional GJA Awards held in Bolgatanga, where journalists and media professionals were celebrated for excellence in reporting and public service.

Speaking to A1 Radio’s Mark Smith after receiving the honour, Jalulah expressed gratitude to the regional GJA executives for what he described as a thoughtful recognition of his contribution to journalism and community development.

“I see this recognition as a testament to my dedicated service to the development of the Upper East Region and the growth and sustainability of excellent journalism,” he said.

Recounting his nearly two decades in the profession, Jalulah reflected on both the challenges and rewards of his career, including life-threatening experiences while covering conflicts and natural disasters. “As a two-time victim of attacks in the line of duty, I recall how those moments could have cost me my life,” he said. “But God spared me because my work as a journalist was not yet done.”

Jalulah also highlighted his efforts in mentoring young journalists through training programmes and on-the-job coaching. “Many of those I trained are now performing excellently in their respective media houses,” he said, adding that building capacity and empowering the next generation of journalists remains one of his proudest achievements.

As GJA Regional Chairman, he grew the association’s membership from 16 to 50 and strengthened partnerships with institutions that continue to benefit journalists across the region.

This year’s awards was on the theme: “Upholding Public Trust: The Role of the Media in Promoting Accountable Governance in the Upper East Region.”

The event had support from WaterAid Ghana under the Sexual Health and Reproductive Education (SHARE) project, Paga Youth Movement, Cardinal Namdini Mining Company Ltd, Kacstone Records, Ghana Shippers’ Authority, and Rural Initiatives for Self-Empowerment (RISE) Ghana.

The others were MTN Ghana, Endswell Pharmacy, Development Research and Advocacy Center (DRAC), Earl International Group Gold Ghana Ltd, Physioshop Production Center (PPC) Paga, Widows and Orphans Movement (WOM), and Ghana Hotels Association – Upper East Region Branch.

The rest were Adonai Sports Management, UK, Ghana Tourism Authority, Atiamah Catering Services; Blue Sky Hotel; Bolga Technical University; ICOUR, and Mozak Multimedia Services
