Traffic lights in Bolgatanga restored after nearly a year of breakdown

After nearly a year of non-functioning traffic lights at key intersections, the lights in the Bolgatanga Municipality have finally been restored, bringing relief to motorists and pedestrians alike.

The prolonged malfunction sparked widespread public frustration, with residents repeatedly calling on municipal and regional authorities to act.

As of this week, the traffic lights at the Library Junction, SSNIT intersection, and the Police Headquarters junction were all observed to be working effectively, a development warmly welcomed by road users.

For months, the lack of functioning traffic lights posed serious safety risks, especially during the early morning and evening rush hours when traffic volumes peak. The absence of regulation often led to confusion, forcing both drivers and pedestrians to rely on caution and chance to navigate the busy intersections.

While the restoration has been met with excitement, residents are urging the municipal authorities to adopt a more proactive approach to infrastructure maintenance. They emphasize that timely repairs of critical road facilities are essential to prevent accidents and ensure safety.

A tricycle operator, Robert Ajampomboa, reacting under a Facebook post, wrote:

“In fact, yesterday I witnessed a terrible accident around that place, and today, I was very excited to see the traffic lights working. It will help save lives. Kudos to the brains behind its resurrection.”

It is, however, yet to be established how many road accidents occurred at these intersections during the period when the traffic lights were non-functional.
