The Bolgatanga Central Constituency Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Isaac Ayemvoa, has called for a full-scale investigation into allegations of mismanagement and political diversion of fertilizer meant for farmers in the Upper East Region.

The call follows claims by Dr. Bryan Acheampong, former Minister for Food and Agriculture and a 2026 NPP presidential  candidate hopeful, that fertilizer supplied to the region under a dry spell relief program was mishandled by some former Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).

Dr. Acheampong reportedly alleged that portions of the fertilizer were hoarded ahead of the 2024 general elections.

In response, the former MMDCEs held a press conference dismissing the allegations as false, claiming that the fertilizer arrived too close to, or even after, the elections to have been used for political purposes. Their account was, however, disputed by Maxwell Aburiya, Regional Campaign Coordinator for Dr. Acheampong, who maintained that the former minister’s statement was accurate.

Mr. Ayemvoa said the controversy was deeply concerning and demanded immediate action from law enforcement and anti-corruption agencies.

“Fertilizers intended to assist our hardworking farmers should not be treated like personal property or political giveaways,” he said. “It is in the public interest that this issue be thoroughly investigated to promote transparency and accountability.”

He called for answers to key questions, including how many bags of fertilizer were sent to the Upper East Region, how they were distributed, and who the actual beneficiaries were.

Mr. Ayemvoa also cited a 2024 incident in the Bolgatanga Central Constituency where several bags of fertilizer were allegedly impounded after being transported at night by tricycle. The discovery, he said, raised further suspicions about how relief fertilizers were handled.

The NDC official emphasized that clarifying the matter was necessary to restore public confidence in the management of agricultural support programs.
