Chairman of the Vea Spillway Bridge Project, Michael Anaabugre Akonea, has described the newly constructed spillway bridge as not only a victory for the people of Vea but also a major asset for the entire Upper East Region.
Speaking on Bolga FM’s Tingmaalgo Sanga, Mr. Akonea said the bridge’s benefits extend beyond the Vea community, noting that it enhances connectivity, facilitates trade, and promotes regional development.
“This bridge is for the entire Upper East Region, not just for Vea,” he emphasized. “Communities in Bongo, Bolgatanga, and beyond will benefit from easier movement of goods, improved access to markets, and better social services. It’s a bridge that unites us all.”
Recounting the journey that led to the project’s completion, Mr. Akonea said that since 2019, community members had appealed to several government offices for support but received none.
“We realized that no one was coming to our aid. So, we came together as a people to do it ourselves—for our farmers, our children, and our future,” he said.
Mr. Akonea urged other communities across the Upper East Region to draw inspiration from the Vea initiative, describing it as evidence that collective effort and community leadership can achieve meaningful and lasting development.
