A women’s advocacy organization has condemned the alleged defilement of two young girls in Bawku and called on authorities to ensure swift justice in the case.
Women in Broadcasting (WIB), a women-led organization promoting the rights and welfare of media practitioners and women and children in Ghana, issued a press statement Friday expressing shock over the incident involving two girls, ages seven and four.
The alleged perpetrator, identified as Sule Fongo, came to public attention through a documentary by A1 Radio that brought the case to light, according to the statement.
“This appalling act allegedly perpetrated by one Sule Fongo represents not only a grave violation of the victims’ rights but also a distressing reflection of the continued threats faced by children in our communities,” the organization said.
The group called on the Ghana Police Service, the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU), the Department of Social Welfare and other stakeholders to expedite investigations and ensure the accused is delivered swiftly to justice without compromise.
WIB also urged women’s rights organizations, civil society groups and community leaders to join forces in advocating for child protection and the eradication of sexual and gender-based violence.
“Children must be allowed to live freely, safely, and without fear,” the statement read. “Their innocence and dignity must be preserved at all costs.”
The organization warned that shielding perpetrators like Sule Fongo perpetuates cycles of abuse and injustice.
The press statement was issued by Humul-Khrusum Tahiru, president of Women in Broadcasting, and Sarah Teni Babohima, secretary.
The Ghana Police Service and DOVVSU have not yet issued public statements on the case.
