The Northern Women Awards, a prestigious platform dedicated to promoting and empowering women in the creative arts industry in Northern Ghana, has nominated Mavis Atia, a female Kologo musician from the Upper East Region, in the Women in Music 2025 category.

The event, which seeks to celebrate and elevate women making significant contributions to the creative space, is scheduled to take place on November 22, 2025, at the Sam Executive Cuisine in Tamale.

Mavis Atia, currently recognized as the only active female Kologo artiste in the Upper East Region, expressed her excitement and deep sense of fulfillment upon receiving the nomination. In an interview with our reporter, she described the recognition as both humbling and inspiring.

“I am overjoyed with this nomination. It reflects my dedication and passion for my art. Being acknowledged in such a way motivates me to keep pushing the boundaries of Kologo music and to inspire other young women to explore their talents,” she said.

Over the past few years, Mavis Atia has been redefining Kologo music—a traditional genre predominantly dominated by men—by infusing it with contemporary sounds and powerful messages centered on empowerment, culture, and social change.

Her performances have earned her admiration across the region, positioning her as a rising force in the Northern music landscape.

Organizers of the Northern Women Awards noted that Mavis’s nomination aligns with their mission to spotlight women who are breaking barriers and making a lasting impact in their respective fields.

The 2025 edition of the awards is expected to draw prominent personalities, industry players, and advocates of women’s empowerment from across Northern Ghana.
