Nana Oye Lithur, Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, revealed on Wednesday that her ministry is rolling out a policy that will help tackle issues of infringement on the rights of children.

The Minister was speaking at an event to mark this year’s African Union’s Day of The African Child in Sirigu in the Kasena-Nankana West District.

“My Ministry under the department of children is presently developing a comprehensive policy and a national plan that will help deal with issues of infringement on the right of the child”- Lithur revealed.

Daniel Syme, Deputy Upper East Regional Minister also speaking at the event, called on Municipal and District Assemblies to enact bye-laws to ensure the total elimination of harmful socio-cultural practices in the community.

He revealed that, Sirigu was selected to host the durbar because of the people’s commitment to stop their traditional practice of killing innocent children described as ‘spirit children’ due to, deformities they are often born with.

The AU’s day of the African child has since 1991 been celebrated on June 16 every year in memory of hundreds of black children who took to the streets of Soweto, South Africa to demand for quality education which was their right but were shot down by security forces in the process.

The day further provides an opportunity for African governments, NGOs and individuals to renew their commitments towards improving the marginalized in general and vulnerable children in particular.

The day should have been marked last month but the country could not, therefore, marked it.
