Atogutue Ayoroko Sulemana, the 2025 Bolgatanga Municipal Best Farmer from the Zaare community, is calling on the youth to pursue careers in agriculture to help Ghana achieve food self-sufficiency.
Mr. Atogutue, who also serves as the Assembly Member for the Zaare West Electoral Area, shared how he transitioned from business into farming in 2018—a decision he says has brought him both fulfillment and success.
Speaking after receiving his award on Farmers’ Day, he encouraged young people to follow his example, stressing that farming is not only profitable but also vital to national development.
“I want to encourage all the youth. When you are a farmer, you are not farming only for yourself—you are farming to earn something greater than what I have received today,” he said.
He credited agricultural extension officers for their continued guidance and support. “I want to extend my gratitude to all the agric extension officers. They are really doing their job,” he added.
As the municipal best farmer, Mr. Atogutue received a Motorking tricycle, two bars of Keysoap, a knapsack sprayer, two pairs of Wellington boots, cloth, three bags of YARA fertilizer, two OFA products, and a certificate.
Ghana celebrated the 41st Farmers’ Day under the theme “Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure the Future.” Mr. Atogutue believes that increased youth participation in farming will help reduce the nation’s dependence on food imports and strengthen long-term food security.
He currently cultivates onions, tomatoes, pepper, beans, and rice, and is also engaged in livestock and poultry production.
