Bolgatanga Municipal Best Farmer urges government to prioritize guinea fowl rearing

The 2025 Bolgatanga Municipal Best Farmer, Atogutue Sulemana, is calling on the government to shift its focus from the Nkoko Nkitikiti initiative to promoting guinea fowl rearing in the Upper East Region.

Mr. Atogutue argued that guinea fowls are better suited to the region’s climate and are far more resilient to the intense heat experienced in the north. Unlike poultry birds—many of which die from heat stress, with some farms losing 10 to 15 birds in a single day—guinea fowls thrive in such conditions.

Speaking to the media, he appealed to the government to reconsider its strategy and invest more in guinea fowl production. “If the government truly wants to help the people of the Upper East, the best way would be to focus on guinea fowl rearing rather than the Nkoko Nkitikiti initiative,” he said.

Mr. Atogutue noted that the region already has a strong reputation and expertise in guinea fowl production, which, if supported, could boost national food security.

His comments follow the launch of the Nkoko Nkitikiti initiative by President John Dramani Mahama, aimed at revitalizing the poultry sector and improving household food security.
