A member of the NDC communications team in the Upper East Region, Solomon Zinekena, has expressed deep concern about what he describes as a persistent and worsening robbery situation in the Talensi District. Speaking during an interview on A1 Radio, he stressed that the trend has continued for several years and is now severely affecting daily life, business activities, and community safety.
According to him, Talensi has become increasingly vulnerable to frequent attacks, with incidents occurring almost every day. Communities such as Shega, Sawalga, Yamiriga, Gbane, and routes linking the mining areas are reportedly among the most affected. He noted that many residents are forced to stop movement as early as 6 PM for fear of being attacked, and some routes have become no-go areas after dark due to recurring assaults on travellers.
“Robbery is a serious problem in Talensi. We’ve been on this particular matter for more than five years now. I’ve written several times. I have made pronouncements on traditional media, calling on everybody to support Talensi to be able to eradicate or reduce drastically the rate of robbery in Talensi. It appears we are pouring water on a rock. Almost every day, we record robbery in Talensi. And that is affecting businesses.”
He explained that the robbers often target motorbikes, money, and personal belongings, and some victims end up wounded or, in extreme cases, lose their lives. He added that the insecurity is also discouraging economic activity, as businesses shut down early to avoid risk.
Mr. Zinekena acknowledged the efforts of the newly appointed police commander in Talensi and a special operations team for showing commitment to improving security. He said community members, traditional authorities, and local leaders have also played their part by providing temporary accommodation and logistics to support police deployment, particularly around the mining areas.
Despite these contributions, he argued that the situation demands stronger, more urgent intervention from the Ghana Police Service. He urged both the district and regional command to intensify operations in Talensi and prioritise security along the major routes where robberies have become rampant.
“Ghana Police Service, I am pleading with them, through this medium, if the regional commander is listening to me, and the district police commander of Talensi, I am pleading with them to act in alacrity. They should move into Talensi, and let’s see whether we can arrest this particular issue.”
He maintained that the community is ready to collaborate with law enforcement and hopes that decisive action will help restore safety, protect livelihoods, and allow residents to move freely without fear.
