The Upper East Regional Secretary Aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salahu-Deen Musah Al-Khomeini, has described the recent visit of the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to the region as “shocking and surprising,” particularly to political opponents and observers who underestimated the party’s strength in the area.

Speaking on A1 Radio, Al-Khomeini said the massive turnout that greeted Dr. Bawumia caught many by surprise, including supporters of other aspirants within the party.

“Even the Kennedy supporters themselves saw what happened and were amazed by the overwhelming response Dr. Bawumia received in the Upper East Region,” he stated.

According to him, what stood out most was the open declaration of support by party executives during the visit—a development he described as unprecedented and a clear indication of growing unity within the NPP.

He noted that many party members, including himself, were astonished by the scale of enthusiasm and endorsement shown.

Al-Khomeini explained that Dr. Bawumia’s message to delegates across the country has been consistent and straightforward: reclaiming political power for the NPP.

He emphasized that the flagbearer has taken time to address propaganda and misconceptions surrounding his candidacy, including claims related to his religious background, ethnicity, and voting patterns in Zongo communities.

“He has gone to all 16 regions—something that has never happened in the history of the NPP,” Al-Khomeini said, adding that Dr. Bawumia used these engagements to clarify issues, counter misinformation, and present a clear vision for the party’s future, particularly towards winning power in 2028.

He further revealed that Dr. Bawumia outlined key proposals aimed at strengthening the party internally, including improving the welfare system, developing a robust party database, and ensuring at least ten appointments in every constituency when elected president.

Touching on the party’s loss in the last general election, Al-Khomeini stressed that Dr. Bawumia has consistently urged members to accept collective responsibility rather than placing blame on any single individual.

He noted that the flagbearer referenced findings and recommendations from the Professor Mike Oquaye Committee report to guide the party’s rebuilding process.

Ultimately, Al-Khomeini said Dr. Bawumia’s message centres on unity.

“He believes that only a united NPP can be the vehicle to wrest power from the NDC,” he concluded.
