Madam Fawzia Yakubu Abagnama, the Upper East Regional Women’s Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has donated food items to 200 widows in the Gowrie community of the Bongo District to enable them to celebrate the Christmas season with dignity.
The donation comprised 200 bags of 5kg rice and 200 live chickens, with each widow receiving one bag of rice and a chicken.
Presenting the items, Madam Fawzia said the gesture was motivated by her personal experience and commitment to women’s welfare, particularly widows who often face neglect and economic hardship, especially during festive periods.
“As a widow and a women’s leader, I understand what widows go through. In seasons like this, they are usually not remembered, and that makes it difficult for them to enjoy the festivities like others. This support is to let them know they are seen, valued and loved,” she said.
She explained that Christmas is a time of sharing and compassion, and it was important to extend support to vulnerable members of society to ensure no one is left behind during celebrations.
Madam Fawzia encouraged the beneficiaries to remain hopeful and assured them of her continued advocacy for women and widows in the Upper East Region. She also called on individuals, organizations and community leaders to make widow support a collective responsibility.
Some of the widows expressed heartfelt gratitude to the NDC Women’s Organizer, describing the donation as timely and life-changing. They said the items would help them prepare decent meals for their families during the Christmas festivities.
