The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Nabdam, Francis Yenwona Tobig, has admonished the youth of the district to abstain from drug abuse, warning that substance use poses a serious threat to their future.

He bemoaned the increasing influx of illicit drugs into communities and cautioned members of the public against allowing themselves to fall prey to substance abuse.

Mr. Tobig made these remarks while addressing the youth, women, and elders of Meehiboug at the closing ceremony of the 16th edition of the Meehiboug Youth Association’s annual inter-community football gala.

“It is important for us to be reminded that one of the major problems confronting us is the illicit drugs that our children take. I want to use this opportunity to advise the youth not to allow the inundation of these drugs to destroy their lives, because many of those abusing drugs have the potential to become chiefs, DCEs, and other leaders,” he said.

“Instead, under the influence of drugs, some ride carelessly and end up perishing on our roads. This is an unpleasant phenomenon, and I call on parents to advise their children to refrain from drug abuse, because it is not good to lose one’s life,” he added.

Mr. Tobig, who also doubles as the Youth Organiser of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), further advised residents of Nabdam to keep their surroundings clean in order to prevent the outbreak of diseases.

Speaking ahead of the crowning of Kongo United as champions of this year’s tournament, the DCE pledged to install streetlights in the area to enhance night-time visibility and improve safety.

As winners of the competition, Kongo United received a trophy, a set of jerseys, and One Thousand Ghana Cedis (GHC 1,000.00). Pelungu FC emerged as runners-up and were awarded Eight Hundred Ghana Cedis (GHC 800.00) and a football. Zoogo FC placed third after defeating Sakote FC on penalties and received Five Hundred Ghana Cedis (GHC 500.00), while Sakote FC, who finished fourth, were also presented with a football.

The Meehiboug Youth Association’s football gala is one of the biggest tournaments in the Nabdam District. It seeks to unearth football talent for Talensi, Nabdam, the Upper East Region, and the country at large. The tournament also aims to foster unity among communities and use football as a tool to drive local development.

In attendance were the District Chief Executive for Nabdam, Mr. Francis Yenwona Tobig, as Special Guest of Honour; the Nabdam District Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Mr. Desmond Gbandanbil; the Assembly Member for the Zanlerigu Dagliga Electoral Area, Mr. Isaac Wulug; elders of Meehiboug; and other key dignitaries.
