The Founder of the People’s National Party (PNP), Janet Asana Nabla, has alleged that President John Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have taken her idea of establishing a Women’s Development Bank. She claims the concept was originally her brainchild.
“The Women’s Bank is something I was very passionate about. When you think about it, this Women’s Bank idea President Mahama picked is my idea,” she said.
Speaking on Prime Insight, Madam Nabla explained that she first proposed the idea while she was a member of the People’s National Congress (PNC), with the aim of providing low-interest loans to market women.
“In the 2020 elections, I issued a statement, which is still in the media. At the time, I was with the PNC, and I said that when the PNC comes to power, one of the things we would do is direct commercial banks, including NIB and ADB, to give low-interest loans to market women to support their businesses,” she stated.
Madam Nabla questioned the current status of the Women’s Development Bank and advised President Mahama to implement the policy through existing commercial banks with structures across all 261 districts.
“I want to give a simple piece of advice to the President. He can start this Women’s Bank initiative through commercial banks, because they already have structures in all 261 districts. He can designate specific branches as Women’s Bank outlets and begin disbursing funds to women,” she added.
