35 former Regional Executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Upper East Region have declared their support for former Vice President, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, ahead of the party’s flagbearer election scheduled for January 31, 2026.
The declaration was made at a press conference held at the Regional Party Office in Bolgatanga, where the former executives said their decision followed careful assessment of all five aspirants contesting the flagbearer position.
Addressing the media, Alhaji Issah Sanusi, Spokesperson on behalf of the former executives said Dr. Bawumia stands out as the best candidate capable of leading the party back to power in the 2028 general elections.
“After careful scrutiny of the five aspirants and deep reflection, and out of our unwavering love for the party and our collective desire to recapture political power, we have come to the firm conclusion that Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia represents the best possible choice for the NPP in 2028,” he stated.
The former executives described Dr. Bawumia as the most electable candidate, citing his experience, leadership qualities and understanding of the current political landscape.
“Given his calibre, experience and competence, and considering the current political environment, we believe Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is best positioned to lead the NPP back to victory and reclaim power from the NDC,” they stated.
They also pointed to political consistency as a key factor in their endorsement, noting that Dr. Bawumia led the party into the 2024 elections and deserves another opportunity, in line with the party’s tradition.
“Among the five contesting candidates, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia stands out. Having led the party into the 2024 elections, he brings invaluable experience. As has been the tradition in our party, he deserves a second opportunity,” the group said.
The former executives further praised Dr. Bawumia’s character and leadership style, describing him as humble, competent and dedicated to national development.
“He has consistently demonstrated competence, resourcefulness, humility and dedication—qualities essential for rebuilding the party, uniting its base and transforming Ghana,” they added.
On his vision for the country, the group said Dr. Bawumia’s ideas align with the aspirations of Ghanaians across all segments of society.
“Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s vision emphasizes humanity, inclusive development and sustainable socio-economic transformation. His ideas resonate with the aspirations of Ghanaians—youth, women, men and the elderly,” they noted.
The group stressed that a total of thirty-five former Regional Executives from the Upper East Region have thrown their weight behind the former Vice President.
“We wish to state clearly that thirty-five former Regional Executives have unequivocally declared their support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia,” the statement said.
They concluded by calling on delegates of the New Patriotic Party nationwide to rally behind Dr. Bawumia in the upcoming flagbearer contest.
“We therefore call on all delegates of the New Patriotic Party to rally behind Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to lead the NPP and secure victory in the 2028 general elections,” the group urged.
