The Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, says more than 4,600 young people in the region have been engaged through various government employment and skills development interventions aimed at tackling youth unemployment.
Speaking at the first press soiree organized under the current administration, Mr. Atanga said 1,953 young people have been recruited under the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) and deployed across all 15 districts in the region.
The beneficiaries include 893 Community Police Assistants, 280 Fire Service Assistants, 393 Community Medical First Responders, and 387 Prisons Service Assistants. Each recruit is entitled to a monthly stipend of GH¢800, with the Police and Fire Service Assistants having already received two months of payments, he said.
In addition, the minister said 2,025 young people are undergoing skills training in various trades as part of efforts to build long-term employability. The training areas include carpentry, masonry, plaster of Paris works, hairdressing, welding, sewing, auto mechanics, plumbing, electrical installation, information and communication technology, and catering, among others.
He also highlighted the Adwumawura Programme, launched in April 2025 to promote youth entrepreneurship. According to Atanga, 627 beneficiaries have been recruited in the Upper East Region under the program. All participants have completed a five-week intensive training course, and their business proposals are currently being reviewed ahead of the disbursement of funds.
The interventions, he said, form part of broader efforts by the government to create jobs, equip young people with practical skills and support small business development in the region.
