The Irrigation Company of Upper Regions (ICOUR) has commenced a desilting exercise at one of its reservoirs at the Tono Irrigation Scheme to improve water flow to farmlands. According to the organisation, the reservoirs had not been desilted for nearly 50 years, causing heavy sediment buildup that hindered effective water delivery.

Similar maintenance works have also been carried out on canals at the Vea Irrigation Scheme to support water supply for the dry season.

In a statement on its official Facebook page, ICOUR announced that water has been released for nursery preparation. Water was opened to the right bank canal on Saturday, January 24, 2026, and to the left bank canal on Monday, January 26, 2026. The company said maintenance work would continue on some facilities to avoid disrupting the cropping calendar.

ICOUR urged farmers to clean their lateral canals to ensure the free flow of water to their fields and to adhere to irrigation rules to prevent damage to infrastructure. The organisation thanked farmers and stakeholders for their patience during the maintenance period and wished them a productive farming season.
