Former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia secured a strong showing in the Upper East Region during the New Patriotic Party’s Jan. 31 presidential primaries, winning the majority of constituencies and recording an overall regional performance of 61%, according to results from party collation.
Dr. Bawumia, widely known within the party as DMB, won in 14 out of the region’s 15 constituencies, underscoring a broad base of support among delegates in the area.
His strongest performances came from Nabdam, where he polled 76.74%, Talensi with 75.75%, and Navrongo Central at 73.03%. He also recorded significant margins in Bolgatanga East (68.89%), Bolgatanga Central (68.12%), Pusiga (64.84%) and Bawku Central (64.77%).
Other constituencies where he secured more than half of the votes include Chiana-Paga (63.55%), Builsa North (61.96%), Bongo (57.48%), Builsa South (55.63%), Tempane (55.01%) and Garu (53.15%).
In Zebilla, Dr. Bawumia obtained 39.12%. Binduri was the only constituency where he did not win, though party sources described his 27.40% there as an improvement compared to previous internal contests.
