“Stop mentioning Bawumia’s name” — Johnson Ayine tells NDC

A member of the NPP’s Upper East Regional Communications Team, Johnson Ayine, has rejected claims by key members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that they are happy about the re-election of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the NPP’s flagbearer for the 2028 election.

Some NDC figures, including the party’s Upper East Regional Communications Officer, Jonathan Abdallah Salifu, have suggested they had hoped for Dr. Bawumia’s return because he is a familiar and beatable opponent. Mr. Abdallah was quoted as saying, “I was campaigning for Dr. Bawumia myself.”

Using the analogy of targeting the weakest person in a free-for-all fight, Mr. Abdallah argued that although the NDC had not faced the other four aspirants who contested Dr. Bawumia, the party remained confident it could defeat him again, as it did in the 2024 election.

However, Mr. Ayine, who has shown interest in leading the NPP’s communications directorate in the Upper East Region, said the NDC’s comments are driven by fear rather than confidence.

“What do we expect them to say? We expect them to say what they have said. I listened to one of them say it was rather Kennedy Agyapong they feared. That is fine. If you think Dr. Bawumia is a walkover, keep quiet — don’t talk about him again,” Mr. Ayine said.

“They keep mentioning Bawumia’s name like an Accra trotro mate shouting ‘Kejetia, Kejetia, Kejetia.’ If they think he is a walkover, they should stop mentioning his name and leave him alone for us.”

Expressing confidence in the NPP’s chances, Mr. Ayine added, “Dr. Bawumia is the one who will take over in 2028, Insha Allah.”
