Government says it is expecting Nigeria to resume supply of gas to Ghana “in a matter of days,” following completion of repair works on the damaged onshore gas pipeline.
This means that Sunon-Asogli power plant, which relies on gas to power its generators to produce electricity, will soon resume operation.
The plant, which produces 200 megawatts of power has been idle for almost 12 months, after the West Africa Gas Pipeline was ruptured.
The restoration of the plant will see an addition of 200 megawatts of power onto the national grid, which could result in an end to ongoing load management at peak hours.
Addressing the media in Accra on Thursday, Energy and Petroleum Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah announced that repair works were 95% complete, while testing was being done ahead of the resumption of supply of gas from Nigeria.
Meanwhile, Mr. Armah-Kofi Buah says government will continue to resource the Ghana Gas Company to enable it fully maximize gas from Ghana’s oil fields for domestic and commercial use.
He said they have made “great efforts to ensure that current challenges facing the energy sector are addressed”.
The Minister said government was also pursuing aggressive policies to restructure the Tema Oil Refinery and turn it into a modern refinery.
