The Presbyterian Eye Clinic at Yorongo in the Bolgatanga Municipality has expanded its services beyond eye care to include general medical services. The newly commissioned facilities include a double theatre block, maternity ward, and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
The Eye Coordinator and Administrator of the facility, Peter Abugri, explained that the expansion became necessary after the clinic observed that many patients who visited for eye care also had other medical conditions that required attention.
“While we were carrying out eye services, we realized that some people would come and complain that they also had stomach pain, fever, and other conditions, and we were helpless,” he said.
“In the process of examining the eye, we could also identify some general conditions, such as diabetes and hypertension,” he added.
To address this challenge, the clinic partnered with Friends of Boko and Wild Geese, development partners based in the Netherlands, to fund the expansion project.
“Our constraint was resources because we had limited infrastructure to add general services. We made an appeal to our development partners, Friends of Boko and Wild Geese, based in the Netherlands. They decided to support us to put up this structure and purchase some equipment and instruments,” he explained.
With the expansion, the clinic now offers surgical services, maternity care, and general medical services.
Mr. Abugri assured the public that the facility has the necessary staff, equipment, and expertise to deliver quality healthcare, noting that only a few minor items remain to be acquired.
According to him, the expansion is expected to reduce referrals and improve access to healthcare services for residents in the municipality and surrounding communities. He also pledged that the clinic would continue to maintain high standards of professionalism in its operations.
