A relationship counselor, Purepeya Ayamga, has sparked debate after suggesting that some people should not be left alone to decide whether to marry.
Speaking on the Love Affairs program on A1 Radio, he argued that marriage is not just a personal choice but something everyone should experience. “Marriage is an institution that every single soul should taste,” he said.
The counselor used the Bible to support his point, citing Genesis 2:24, where it says a man “shall” leave his parents and unite with his wife. “When the Bible says ‘shall,’ it means it is not negotiable. It means you must,” he explained.
He also referenced Proverbs 18:22, which states: “He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from God.”
Mr. Purepeya strongly disagreed with the idea that not everyone must marry, arguing that such views often come from people who have had negative experiences. “This statement is made by people who have failed in marriage and are trying to justify it,” he said.
He added that such perspectives are influencing young people to delay marriage. One of his key arguments was that many people would never marry if they are not guided or pressured.
“Leave a man or woman alone, they will never get married,” he stated.
Counselor Purepeya further stressed that marriage helps people avoid immoral behavior. “If you cannot control yourself, then get married and do it the right way,” he said.
He also proposed age benchmarks that have raised eyebrows: men should begin planning for marriage at 25 and marry by 30, while women should be married by 25. “After 30, it becomes difficult to change. Two strong people cannot easily adjust,” he explained.
His comments have received mixed reactions. While some agree that marriage is important, others believe it should remain a personal choice.
