The Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Atanga Akamugri, has cut sod for the construction of a new multipurpose dining hall at Sirigu Integrated Senior High School in the Kassena-Nankana West District.

The project follows the recent release of funds from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) to support critical education infrastructure across the country.

The new dining hall is expected to provide much-needed space and improved facilities for students, addressing the growing demand for better amenities at the school. It forms part of broader GETFund efforts to enhance infrastructure, improve student welfare and expand access to quality education.

Speaking at the ceremony, Akamugri emphasized the importance of investing in education as a foundation for national development.

He said the dining hall would not only serve as a space for students to eat but also function as a multipurpose facility for school activities, helping to create a more conducive learning environment.

The project is expected to ease pressure on existing facilities, which have been strained by increasing student numbers, and contribute to overall improvements in school infrastructure.

The release of GETFund resources for this and similar projects underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring students have access to essential facilities that support academic success and well-being.

Community members, school authorities and other stakeholders expressed appreciation for the initiative, noting the positive impact it is expected to have on students and the broader educational environment in Sirigu.

Akamugri said the project is expected to be completed within 18 months.

The headmaster of Sirigu Integrated Senior High School also used the occasion to highlight key challenges facing the institution, warning that they could hinder effective teaching and learning if not addressed.

These include a lack of access to clean water, inadequate and unhygienic toilet facilities, the absence or poor condition of an ICT laboratory, and a deteriorating school fence wall.

The event was attended by the Kassena-Nankana West District Chief Executive, Steph Aeke Akurungo, as well as the headmaster, staff and students of the school. Assembly members and community members were also present, reflecting strong local interest in improving the school’s infrastructure.
