The Paramount Chief of the Bongo Traditional area, Naba Baba Salifu Alemyaarum has appealed to parents within the Gurune speaking areas of the Upper East Region to always exercise restraint towards their in-laws to enable them pay their dowries.

According to the chief, in some communities in the Gurune speaking areas, dowries of three cattle and seven sheep or four cattle are often demanded before a man can get a wife. This he said makes some youth in these parts of the region reluctant about going into marriage.

“Taking three cattle and seven sheep or four cattle as dowries before you give your daughter out for marriage is not a good thing.

“This dowry system has made it so difficult for most of our young men especially, to marry and most of the young ladies to also stay with their respective husbands.”
