The Member of Parliament for the Bongo Constituency, Lawyer Charles Bawaduah, and the District Chief Executive, Madam Diana Asoketarige Ayamga, have commended the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) following the handover of two hand-pumped and two mechanized boreholes to the district.

The boreholes, provided under PURC’s corporate social responsibility programme, are intended to serve communities without access to safe drinking water. Speaking at the handover ceremony, Mr. Bawaduah described the intervention as a “privileged opportunity” for the people of Bongo, particularly Lungo.

“Let me use this opportunity to thank PURC for this humane intervention for the people of Bongo in general and Lungo in particular,” he said.

“Many communities in this district do not have access to drinking water. However, you have managed to provide even a mechanized system here. We are very excited and grateful.”

He noted that water remains a major challenge in the constituency and disclosed that he had submitted a list of about 42 communities in need of water to PURC’s Accra office.

“I have submitted a long list of about 42 communities that need water to your Accra office, and I am consistently following up. We are grateful for this support for now,” he said.

The District Chief Executive, Madam Ayamga, also appealed for increased support, citing the district’s level of deprivation.

“We are appealing to PURC to give Bongo special attention. The district is highly deprived and needs urgent support. Let us have water, because water is life,” she said.

While acknowledging PURC’s efforts, she stressed the need for sustained intervention.

“Please, let us keep pushing. We need more water interventions than any other district in the region. We are grateful for your good work,” she added.

The handover forms part of PURC’s initiative to drill and transfer boreholes to communities lacking safe drinking water, with management and maintenance now the responsibility of the District Assembly in collaboration with local leaders.
