The Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly is expanding access to primary healthcare and safe water through the construction of CHPS compounds and boreholes across the municipality.
Speaking during his one-year anniversary address to stakeholders on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, Municipal Chief Executive Roland Atanga Ayoo said access to healthcare should not depend on location.
“Access to healthcare is a basic right that must not be determined by geography,” he said.
The stakeholder engagement, attended by health officials, traditional leaders, and residents, included a guided tour of selected health and water projects.
The Assembly is constructing and upgrading Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds in several communities.
At Waribisi-Tanzui, a new CHPS compound is at lintel level. A similar project at Sawaba has reached the roofing stage, while rehabilitation works at Daporetindongo CHPS compound have progressed to roofing, with rewiring underway.
At Sumbrungu, the Anateem Health Centre project is at the plastering and filling stage.
Completed facilities at Yipala, Zaare East, and Kulbia are also expected to improve service delivery once operational.
“These CHPS compounds are designed to deliver essential services, including maternal care, disease prevention, and emergency response at the community level,” Mr. Ayoo said.
The Assembly has also drilled 10 boreholes in Kalbeo, Yipala, Zaare East, and Soe, using a mix of hand pumps and mechanised systems.
“Access to clean water is directly linked to health. By providing boreholes, we are reducing waterborne diseases and improving overall well-being,” he said.
Mr. Ayoo added that water projects are aligned with health interventions to improve outcomes. The Assembly is also intensifying public education on hygiene, maternal health, and disease prevention. “A health facility is only effective when people understand how to use it and trust the services provided,” he said.
He noted that the projects are targeted at underserved communities to reduce disparities in access to healthcare and water. “We are prioritising communities that have historically had limited access. Development must be inclusive,” he said. Mr. Ayoo said the investments are part of efforts to strengthen long-term health resilience in the municipality.
