“Social disorder will not be tolerated” – Biung Chief warns TAMCI

The Chief of Biung Community in the Talensi District, Waakpembil Bobiggbazaar I, has issued a strong warning to the Talensi Mining Communities Initiative (TAMCI), stating that any attempt to engage in social disorder within his jurisdiction will not be tolerated.

In a letter dated May 6, 2026, and addressed to the leadership of TAMCI, the chief prohibited the group from organizing demonstrations within the Biung Traditional Area, accusing the group of repeatedly threatening peace and stability in the area through road protests against Cardinal Namdini Mining Limited.

“For the record, this constitutes approximately the third attempt by your group to use the jurisdiction of the Biung Traditional Area as a platform to organize and execute road protests against the mining company, actions which have consistently threatened peace and caused social disorder,” the chief stated.

Waakpembil Bobiggbazaar I said he was expressly forbidding the group from carrying out “any such disorderly acts” within his traditional area, arguing that TAMCI’s activities over the years had failed to present any substantial breaches by the company to justify public agitation.

“Your demands have predominantly centered on self-serving and divisive calls for the dismissal of company staff—actions that neither promote unity nor contribute meaningfully to the development of the community,” he said.

The chief noted that negotiations on the Social Responsibility Agreement (SRA), being facilitated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), had reached the sign-off stage despite what he described as persistent disruptions from the group.

He also pointed to the establishment of Community Employment Committees and ongoing youth capacity-building initiatives by the mining company as evidence of efforts being made to increase local participation and employment opportunities in the district.

“The company has commenced a youth capacity-building programme aimed at training residents in process plant maintenance and operations, an initiative that holds significant promise for developing a skilled labour force and enhancing employment prospects within the area,” he added.

According to the chief, the mining company requires a peaceful and stable environment to expand operations and create more jobs for the youth.

“Confrontational actions such as those undertaken by your group only serve to disrupt operations and undermine the significant efforts made by key stakeholders toward achieving sustainable development,” he stressed.

He further accused TAMCI of attempting to undermine the authority of traditional leaders and the District Assembly, describing such conduct as unacceptable.

Waakpembil Bobiggbazaar I also urged the youth in the area to distance themselves from activities that could negatively affect their chances of gaining employment with mining companies operating in the district.

“Let this serve as a clear warning: any attempt by TAMCI or its affiliates to engage in social disorder within my jurisdiction, now or in the future, will not be tolerated,” the chief warned.

Despite the warning, the chief indicated that he remained open to constructive dialogue and encouraged the group to channel any genuine concerns through peaceful and appropriate engagement processes instead of demonstrations and road blockades. This directive adds to a similar directive from the Chief of Digaare, who warned the group from organizing a demonstration in his community.
