The Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, Isaac Adongo, has announced plans to roll out an agricultural initiative known as the Grassroots Integrated Agriculture Project aimed at creating jobs and improving livelihoods in the constituency.
Speaking after a week-long inspection and handover of projects in the health, education, water, roads and agriculture sectors, Mr. Adongo said agriculture remains central to the lives of many residents and must be leveraged to address unemployment.
“After you’ve done all of this, livelihood is a very important matter, and because of the level of unemployment, we do know that agriculture employs a lot of our people here, and agriculture is at the heart of our life,” he said.
Mr. Adongo said the initiative would focus on several key areas, including land preparation, crop production and aquaculture.
He described land preparation as critical for both crop and vegetable farming and said he would make five of his personal tractors available to support poor and vulnerable farmers in the constituency.
The MP also said he would collaborate with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to provide improved seedlings for vegetables such as tomatoes and pepper for both rainy and dry season farming.
The project will further target aquaculture by making use of dams across the constituency.
“We want to go into scientific farming of fish. I will be working with stakeholders to provide fish cages for our people in those towns and provide them with fingerlings they can feed,” he said.
According to the Bolgatanga Central legislator, the initiative is intended to help unemployed youth raise fish to maturity and sell them for income.
He added that he would work with the Municipal Chief Executive to secure resources for the cages required for the project.
“Those are the key pillars of my interventions in supporting farmers and the youth,” Mr. Adongo stated.
The announcement forms part of broader efforts by the MP to promote what he describes as transformational development in the constituency beyond short-term interventions.
