The Regional Chaplain of the Ghana Prisons Service in the Upper East Region, Rev. DSP Bugri Joechim, has highlighted ongoing challenges with feeding and healthcare at the Navrongo Central Prison, even as he expressed gratitude for a donation from the Ghana National Tailors and Dressmakers Association (GNTDA).
Receiving food items and medical supplies on behalf of the Upper East Regional Commander, Rev. DSP Bugri said the increase in the inmate feeding rate from GH₵1.80 to GH₵5 had improved meals, but systemic challenges remain.
“The funds are paid to a contractor who deducts profit and transport costs before supplying food. Our basic challenge has to do with feeding and medical care,” he explained.
He noted that the facility is managing inmates with serious health conditions, including some with mental illnesses who should ideally be in psychiatric care. “We have inmates with health issues, including some with mental conditions who ideally should be at a psychiatric hospital, but they are managed here,” he said.
Rev. DSP Bugri thanked GNTDA for the donation, saying the food and medicine would ease pressure on the facility and support inmate welfare. He added that additional support such as ceiling fans to improve ventilation would further improve conditions at the prison.
“We must show our profound gratitude to the Ghana National Tailors and Dressmakers Association because they have been a pillar to the Navrongo Central Prison,” he said.
The Bolgatanga Central Zone One of GNTDA said it hopes the donation will improve the welfare of inmates and encourage other organisations and individuals to extend support to prisons across the region.
