Nurses must engage in politics to shape national leadership – Kassena Nankana West DCE

The District Chief Executive for the Kassena Nankana West District Assembly, Stephen Aeke Akurugo, has urged nurses, midwives, and other health professionals to actively participate in partisan politics, saying they have the credibility and communication skills to win votes and lead.

Mr. Aeke, a nurse by profession, made the call while speaking at the Upper East Regional Youth/TEIN Conference held at the Nursing Training College in Bolgatanga as part of the party’s Reset Agenda.

Challenging the notion that health workers should stay neutral, the DCE said he has personally used his consulting room to discuss politics with clients.

“Please, I beg you, I make testimony to all of you, that here we are, as nurses and midwives, we need to engage in politics.

“I have used the consulting room most of the time to talk to my clients, and they are able to understand the party, and they are able to agree with the party, and vote for the party,” he said.

“So take it to me, that one way it is, that we are told that, as nurses and midwives, we don’t need to engage in politics, we have to engage in politics.”

Mr. Aeke pointed to the representation of other professions in Parliament as proof that health workers can also rise to national leadership.

“We have taken that, and doctors have taken the lead. How many doctors are in Parliament? How many engineers, lawyers, and other professions are in Parliament?

“I want to give you the assurance that we can do it. It is not only in Stranger and Lethal that we should be entitled to leadership in politics; we are equally entitled to it.”

The DCE encouraged the youth and TEIN members not to limit themselves to campus politics but to build from the grassroots.

“So from here, do not just end as TEIN members. Get back to your communities, join the branches, and become branch executives, rise to constituency level, and become constituency executives, then regional level and national level.”
